About

I came to counselling through classrooms.

Before I trained as a counsellor I taught young children for many years. It taught me to notice what a person isn’t saying, and to be patient while they find the words.

How I work

Poonam Bhardwaj, psychological counsellor

My approach draws on cognitive behavioural and person-centred methods. In plain terms: we look at what you are thinking and doing when things get difficult, and we look for something that could shift — but we do it at your pace, and I don’t decide for you what the problem is.

A lot of my work has been with adolescents and the adults around them. Young people rarely arrive wanting to talk, so much of that work is about building enough trust that a real conversation becomes possible. The same is true of adults who have never spoken to a counsellor before.

I have also worked alongside schools and multidisciplinary teams, including as Chairperson of the Committee of Asha School in Jodhpur, where I helped set up counselling support for families of children with disability.

I speak Hindi, English and Punjabi, and I’m comfortable moving between them in a session.
